Green-Schools is Ireland’s leading environmental management and education programme for schools.

It promotes long-term, whole-school action for the environment. Green-Schools is a student-led programme with involvement from the wider community. The programme is operated and co-ordinated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce (FEE member for Ireland).
All Saints’ National School have worked on and have achieved Green flags for each of the following themes: Litter and Waste, Energy, Water, Travel, Biodiversity, Global Citizenship Litter and Waste, Global Citizenship and Energy. In May 2023, we received our ninth Green Flag for Global Citizenship and travel. We are currently working on our tenth Green Flag, which we hope to receive in two years. The theme is Global Citizenship and Biodiversity. Ideas on what we can all do together (both in school and at home) have been posted in our Green School's News.

Update: May 2023 - we have been successful! We have achieved our ninth flag for Global Citizenship and Travel! Sincere congratulations to all, especially our hardworking Green School's Committee.

Our main focus in All Saints' N. S. in order to achieve our ninth green flag was on:

CAR IDLING

As part of Clean Air Week we, the Green Schools Committee, would like to address the issue of Car Idling.

WHAT IS CAR IDLING?

  • Car idling is when you leave your car running unnecessarily.
  • EXAMPLES: Warming up your car before driving.
  • Sitting in your car with the engine running etc.

WHY IS IT BAD?

  • It uses fuel.
  • It wastes money.
  • It is bad for your car.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS?

  • Not only does it waste fuel and damage your car, it also hurts the environment.
  • 10 minutes of idling is the same as 1 pound of carbon dioxide being emitted into the air around us.

Information/Facts

  • Your car warms up much faster when you drive compared to when you idle.
  • Starting and stopping your car does not burn more fuel than idling for a few seconds.

CONCLUSION

  • You really should not idle as there are much more cons to idling than pros.
